Congratulations to Scott Robertson, the Volunteer of the Month. Volunteer Services Manager Michele Gingras says, “Scott has been a great addition to our Saturday group of volunteers, and his sense of humor is enjoyed by the clients as well as the staff.”
Why we love him: When Scott arrives at The Shea Center on Saturdays, his outgoing personality comes with him! He is very personable and interactive with clients, fellow volunteers, and staff.
Road to The Shea Center: Scott is the brother of Volunteer Services Manager Michele Gingras. “She said if I didn’t volunteer, she would tell our dad about the time I ate all of his M&Ms and blamed it on our dog. I wasn’t sure if the statute of limitations had expired on that particular crime, so I accepted her offer. Turns out I enjoy volunteering for Shea.”
Years of Service: Scott began volunteering “one very early Saturday morning in February 2023. Despite my sister reminding me to pay attention all morning, it was a great experience and locked me in.”
Lessons learned: “How to better put things in perspective and appreciate the little things. Getting to experience what others have gone through or are going through can be humbling. Also, I now know how to be around horses, which was always a bucket list item for me. The first time I rode a horse, I was in my 20s. The horse had one eye and was eating the side of the barn when we were introduced. She took me on a wild ride that day. Once we got back to the barn and I stopped shaking, I decided riding was something I was going to figure out one day.”
Favorite memories at The Shea Center: “Sometimes I can get the clients or staff to smile or laugh by doing or saying silly things. One of the clients told me about going to the prom and graduating high school – that was pretty cool.”
When not volunteering at The Shea Center, he can be found doing this: “My side gig is restoring classic cars. Just finished a 1957 VW Ragtop and am halfway done with a 1965 Stingray. Getting ready to let the ’57 go if anyone is interested.”
He finds his bliss…: “Sitting outside with my dogs. They always seem happy to see me and don’t mind if I smell like a horse.”
