Volunteer of the Month: Rhonda

Feb 3, 2025 | Volunteers

Learn more about Rhonda and the impact she’s making at The Shea Center. Check out her Drive to Ride story and read on below to discover what makes her such an incredible part of our volunteer team!

Why we love her: Rhonda is a leader, sidewalker, and barn crew member who works well with all our program horses. She is also an asset to our mental health program. Personable, upbeat, yet calming, Rhonda is an important team member for our therapy, adaptive riding, mental health, and summer camp clients.

Road to the Shea Center: “In 2010, I drove my daughter to horseback riding lessons, and we would drive right by The Shea Center. I told my daughter I would love to volunteer at The Shea Center one day.”

Years of service: Rhonda began volunteering in 2022 as a sidewalker.

Lessons learned: “The therapists and instructors are incredibly knowledgeable, thorough, and patient with every client and volunteer. Michele, Taylir, and Cara are always happy to answer my questions, and you can be sure they will have snacks. My fellow volunteers are so helpful and kind, and I have enjoyed every single task and laugh we have shared. The LTAs have patiently taught me so much more than I ever knew existed in tacking up a horse at Shea.”

Favorite Shea Center memories: “Every day I get to volunteer at The Shea Center brings a ‘favorite memory’ that I cherish. The moment the client gets on the horse, I feel honored to be a part of their equine lesson. Watching each client progress in their own unique style and time frame is a privilege. I love the little smiles and sparkle in the eyes of the clients when they get to trot, go on a barn walk, or feed their horse carrots from a bucket.”

When not volunteering at Shea, she can be found doing this: “I love to hike with my friends, walk with my husband, and care for my family and my sweet and spicy dog, Bonnie.”

She finds her bliss doing this: “Laughing with my family, being out in nature and helping others.”
