The Backbone of Shea: Board Members Driving Success

Mar 13, 2025 | More Info

When people think of Shea Center volunteers, lesson volunteers often come to mind. However, the Center depends on a diverse group of volunteers to support its daily operations and ensure the success of our nonprofit organization. We have various volunteer roles such as barn and grounds, office assistants, and event committee members that each play a crucial part in advancing our mission: improving the lives of people with disabilities through therapeutic horse-related programs.

Among these dedicated individuals, one group is often behind-the-scenes: The Shea Center’s 23-member board of directors. As the organization’s backbone, board members provide essential leadership, guidance, and oversight to help us thrive. Their role requires more than passion; it demands experience, commitment, and a deep dedication to our mission.

Becoming a Shea Center board member is a significant responsibility, requiring key qualifications such as:
• A strong belief in the nonprofit’s mission and a willingness to advocate for the organization.
• Relevant expertise in leadership, finance, law, marketing, fundraising, nonprofits, or related industries.
• A commitment to making an annual financial contribution, attending bi-monthly board meetings, and dedicating hundreds of hours to committees, fundraising efforts, and events—some even volunteer in lessons.
• Ensuring the organization adheres to legal and ethical standards, approving budgets, overseeing financial health, and setting strategic goals and policies.
• Bringing in donors, sponsors, and community connections while advocating for funding and partnerships.

The Shea Center’s success over many years has been a dynamic partnership between professional staff and dedicated board leaders sharing their time, talent, treasure, and ties. Our clients thrive because of this board and staff partnership, and we are very grateful to our board leaders.
