The hoof is a complex structure that allows the horse to bear weight, move efficiently, and travel over varied terrains. All parts of the hoof support the horse’s weight and distribute it evenly across the ground. The hoof provides traction and absorbs impact during movement, which protects the legs and body from injury. Thus, regular and proper hoof care is essential for our Shea horses’ overall health and well-being.
Like fingernails in humans, the hoof grows continuously throughout the horse’s life and must be trimmed/shod regularly. All Shea horses have routine hoof care every 6-8 weeks. Some of our horses get shoes (all four or just two), while others just get their hooves trimmed.
Hoof care is a daily occurrence at The Shea Center. Our horses get their hooves picked at the beginning of each day, at the end of each day, and after any lesson that takes the horse out on the trail. Regular hoof picking helps to remove hard-packed dirt, small rocks, and wood chips, which could cause bruising or soreness in the hoof. Removing dirt and debris also helps prevent thrush, a common bacterial infection. Because the hoof is rich in nerves, regular hoof picking helps to stimulate blood flow, which is beneficial for overall hoof health and growth. In addition to hoof picking, some of our Shea horses with dry or brittle hooves get a daily hoof conditioning treatment to help maintain the natural moisture balance of their hooves.
