Physical Therapy and Occupational Therapy Client: Ella

Nov 20, 2025 | Clients

Eleven-year-old Shea Center client Ella is currently in her second round of therapy at the Center. She first rode in 2016 and 2017, when she was just four years old, and quickly fell in love with horses—especially her therapy partners, Rushmore and Alik. After several years in Washington State, Ella and her family recently returned to Southern California and were thrilled to come back to The Shea Center, a place that had been such a meaningful resource for them in the past.

At just three months old, Ella was diagnosed with Pompe disease, a rare genetic disorder caused by mutations in the GAA gene that prevents the body from producing enough of the acid alpha-glucosidase (GAA) enzyme. Without this enzyme, glycogen builds up in the body’s cells, leading to progressive muscle weakness and damage to other organs. As a result, Ella experiences global muscle weakness that affects her speech, hearing, heart, lungs, and overall strength.

Ella returned to The Shea Center eight months ago. To build her strength, she rides Alik again each Wednesday for physical therapy utilizing hippotherapy, and on Thursdays, she participates in occupational therapy in the inclusive fitness center.

After contracting COVID-19, Ella’s health was thrown into upheaval. She created antibodies to her weekly infusion medication because of this, and she had to go through a year of immune immodulation that deeply impacted her overall health. She lost much of her strength, but now, through consistent therapy and structured medical care, she has regained significant muscle function. Although she still experiences leg weakness, avoids stairs, and is prone to falls, riding has notably improved her balance and self-confidence.

On horseback, Ella enjoys throwing the ball, riding through the barn, and interacting with the horses. Her physical therapist noted, “Ella has made tremendous progress in physical therapy! One of her favorite activities is leading The Shea Center’s facility dog, Tex. Walking with Tex has helped her gain confidence, lengthen her stride, and increase her pace.”

Ella’s mother shared, “Horses have a powerful connection with the rider and help heal Ella—helping her sit upright and grow stronger. The staff at The Shea Center are so positive and encouraging — it’s a happy place for Ella.”
