Volunteer of the Month: Joy K.

Nov 1, 2019 | Volunteers

Joy Kirby is our volunteer of the month! She learned of The Shea Center through her son’s girlfriend, Taylor Jepsen, who has been a Shea Center volunteer for a year. After hearing about Taylor’s positive experiences at the Center, Joy signed on as a volunteer this past August. She enjoys her versatile role as part of the barn crew and sidewalker. Joy is willing to help wherever necessary and has already stepped up to help us in immeasurable ways. She not only volunteers during regularly scheduled sessions, but also offers to assist during field trips that we host. We appreciate her commitment and enthusiasm.

Volunteer Coordinator, Madisen Clanton, comments, “Joy has become a cornerstone of our field trip program. I can always count on her to be in attendance and be an excellent, involved sidewalker!”

“Sidewalking is unique,” Joy adds, “because of the interaction between the clients, horses, staff members, and volunteers. This is where everything comes together to create a wonderful, inclusive experience for everyone involved. Being part of the volunteer team at Shea has made me feel extremely special.”

Joy’s favorite volunteering bonus is the horses. She has taken a particular liking to our Percheron cross horse, Dolly. Joy says, “Dolly is one special lady who always impresses me. Her patience and gentle nature with the clients is amazing, and her beauty and grace are astounding.”

When not volunteering, Joy enjoys spending time with her three children and loves to be outside and explore with her hiking club.

Congratulations on your award, Joy, and thank you for your dedication and service!
