Client Spotlight: Eleni W.

Jun 10, 2021 | Adaptive Riding, Clients

Twelve-year-old Eleni W. has always loved animals.  She has two dogs and a cat at home, but horses are her very favorite, and riding is the highlight of her week.  Some of Eleni’s first riding experiences took place riding the ponies at Irvine Regional Park.

On riding day, Eleni is out of bed and dressed in her riding clothes hours before her lesson.  She likes to get to The Shea Center early to watch the horses.  She would like to volunteer in the barn someday and perhaps compete in dressage.

Diagnosed with ADHD and high-functioning autism, Eleni has difficulty following instructions and focusing on projects and activities.  But, not when she is on a horse!  Eleni becomes very attentive and makes an effort to concentrate because she wants to excel at riding.

Riding has given Eleni an identity.  Her anxiety has lessened, her self-confidence has improved, and so has her self-esteem.  She believes in herself and her abilities.  Being part of a team with her semi-private lesson partner, Maren, has helped improve her social skills too.

Vicky, Eleni’s mom comments, “At The Shea Center Eleni has found a sense of belonging, she feels part of a supportive community. It is so much more than just horse riding.”

Eleni’s dad, Richard, remarks, “I would recommend The Shea Center to anyone.  People don’t know what kind of support they will get when they come here.  The staff is always accepting of every client and understands the children and their different personalities.   Eleni has a fantastic time accomplishing her goals while having fun.”
