Volunteer of the Month: Doug

Oct 11, 2022 | Volunteers

Please join us in congratulating Doug as our latest Volunteer of the Month!

Why we love him: Doug is a dedicated sidewalker on Saturday mornings, who works primarily with our therapists. With his outgoing personality and always-upbeat nature, Doug engages his clients and encourages them to do their best.

Path to The Shea Center: “I learned of The Shea Center through the daughter of some good friends who has been volunteering at Shea. This young lady said, ‘I know that you have coached your sons and all their friends, including my brother, in just about every sport and I also know that you have had lots of experience owning and riding horses. I now have the perfect opportunity to combine both of your passions while serving some wonderful families!’”

Years of service: Doug has been a volunteer for over eight years.

Lessons learned: “All the therapists I have had the pleasure of working with are so professional, passionate and experienced that I learn something about the use of therapies using horses during every lesson. The clients I have been allowed to serve with teach me every week about strength, courage, fun and determination!”

Favorite Shea Center memories: “Every lesson in which I’m allowed to participate provides highlights: the joy and exuberance of the clients, the passion and conviction of the therapists, the servant hearts and joy of all the staff and volunteers.”

When not at The Shea Center, he likes to…: Doug serves as a corporate healthcare lawyer, serving as the Senior Vice President and General Counsel of a national company that develops, builds, operates and manages senior living healthcare projects. He also serves as an Elder for Coast Hills Church. “More importantly, however, I love being the father of my two married sons and Papa to four grandchildren, and one more on the way!”

He finds his bliss doing this: “I feel immense gratitude to The Shea Center for facilitating my volunteer opportunity and allowing me to serve with some incredible people!”
