What is Equine Assisted Psychotherapy?

Oct 9, 2023 | Equine Assisted Psychotherapy (EAP)

The Shea Center offers mental health services, which include Equine Assisted Psychotherapy (EAP). EAP is defined as a clinical therapy service provided by a licensed mental health professional utilizing equines to improve mental health outcomes. Through carefully tailored interactions with our equine partners, individuals can explore and address various mental health challenges, ranging from anxiety and depression to trauma recovery and self-esteem issues.

EAP sessions begin by completing a full psychological assessment to identify any mental health disorders or significant issues clients may be experiencing. The therapist and client then identify clinical goals targeting those mental health-related issues. Goals for EAP focus on improving the client’s psychological function for enhanced health and wellness. Evidenced-based interventions are used to challenge unhealthy thoughts or behavioral patterns.  The therapist then determines how equine interactions and experiences may enhance the client’s progress toward the goals they set to improve their quality of life.Orange County Mental Health for Children

Equine psychology is utilized to increase self-awareness and deepen our understanding of human psychology.  This is primarily achieved by exploring the fight-or-flight responses both horses and humans have. The equine acts as a “mirror,” reflecting the client’s emotions and intentions which helps clients explore their own behaviors in a non-judgmental way. Working with equine partners helps clients explore the process of change in a supportive environment.  Therapy sessions with equines create experiential ways for clients to overcome barriers and work toward their goals in a non-threatening manner, which increases motivation to change.  EAP has been successful in teaching the clients patience, communication, and assertiveness skills in real time. Based on the skills learned with their equine partner, clinical interventions are then transitioned to be implemented at home, school, or work.

With the increased demand for our services, our greatest need is funding support to grow our vitally important mental health programs. Funds directly support program expenses, including horse care, staff, equipment, and financial aid for clients. This allows us to subsidize service fees and ensure accessibility. To help The Shea Center programs grow, consider donating at SheaCenter.org/donate.

If you are interested in participating in EAP or are curious if it is right for you, please contact Adre Hudgson at ahudgson@sheacenter.org or call (949) 240-8441 ext 123.
