Becoming a Shea Center Horse Leader

Mar 5, 2020 | Volunteers

Additional training to become a horse leader is available for our volunteers. No horse experience is required, but we do encourage new volunteers to first “get their feet wet” by volunteering at the barn before taking the class. Pre-requisites for this class include being able to halter and un-halter our horses and feeling confident bringing the horses out to the cross-ties.

In this training, volunteers learn proper horse handling skills for the safe control of our horses during riding lessons. Students also learn the schooling figures they may be asked to perform during a lesson, how to half-halt a horse, and general horse handling skills.

Volunteer Services Manager, Christina Lee, usually holds leader training classes on Sunday mornings and teaches the volunteers “The Shea Way” of leading horses.

After becoming a leader, additional continuing education classes are available.
