Therapy Horse Bio: Meet Braveheart

Jun 11, 2022 | Our Barn

Meet our 2021 Horse of the Year! Braveheart is a valued member of our herd and had a unique previous career performing at Renaissance Faires.

Why we love him: Braveheart’s bold, good looks and friendly and calm personality have captured the hearts of many of our clients. His beautiful multi-color tail and mane are often lovingly braided by staff and volunteers.

What makes him a great therapy horse: Braveheart’s sturdy build and contoured barrel are wonderful to facilitate a neutral sitting posture and offer high versatility to our clients of all sizes and ages. His gait is especially comfortable and calming, which is excellent for clients who need carefully graded sensory input and for those who are working to gain flexibility through their hips and legs. He is very calm and accepting and always takes careful watch over his clients.

Years of service: Braveheart is what we call a “renaissance man” due to his flexibility across multiple programs. He has participated in our therapy, adaptive riding, and military programs at The Shea Center.

Previous career(s): Braveheart was imported from Germany by his previous owners and worked in Gypsy horse demonstrations and shows at Renaissance Faires across California. At these shows, he would wear colorful and exciting themed costumes and match with his handler or rider.

Fun fact: Braveheart has naturally long hair which grows below his knees and covers his hoofs (called feathering). Typically, we keep it trimmed to keep it neat and tidy.

Stats:
• Age: Born May 1, 2004
• Breed: Gypsy Vanner
• Color/markings: Piebald (Black and White)
• Height: 15.2 hands
