On July 7, 2023 The Shea Center celebrated the retirement of Choco, our beloved therapy horse of 5 years. The heartwarming event brought together Orange County Fire Authority (OCFA) firefighters, Shea staff, volunteers, clients, and their families to give Choco a well-deserved send-off to his retirement at Rock Hills Ranch in Fallbrook, CA, where he will join former Shea therapy horses Hope and Gonzo.
Two years ago, Choco gained notoriety when he fell into a ravine and was air-lifted to safety by the OCFA. His miraculous helicopter rescue from the hills of San Juan Capistrano, on July 5, 2021, by OCFA firefighters resulted in The Shea Center and OCFA partnering on our Equine Urban Search & Rescue training program.
The event was attended by San Juan Capistrano council member Sergio Farias who praised OCFA and The Shea Center’s partnership. Station 56 firefighters, including Captain Danny Goodwin who led Choco’s rescue, arrived in their heavy rescue truck which pulled up to the arena which was decorated with fun retirement signs and banners.
Guests enjoyed refreshments including iced tea and cupcakes while Shea swag was available for the crowd to enjoy. Choco soaked up all the extra attention, treats, and pets while individuals and groups took turns capturing photos with Choco and the fire truck.
The event was a great success and everyone had a wonderful time celebrating him. This special horse has touched the lives of so many people and has served as a wonderful partner for adaptive riding, military, and mental health clients, as well as a schoolmaster for staff. The memories of Choco’s time at The Shea Center will forever hold a special place in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know him.
