Client Spotlight: Abby B.

Nov 4, 2021 | Clients, Occupational Therapy

Abby B.’s bedroom reflects her passion for horses including a horse calendar on the wall.  Last year, on her first day of occupational therapy utilizing hippotherapy at The Shea Center, Abby wasn’t sure horses were much fun.  She was riding a horse in a puppy dog pose and was screaming from anxiety.

Since that first day, things have changed and the horses seem to have a calming effect on Abby.  Now, she meets all her therapy goals and loves to ride.  She is currently riding Easy.  Abby is proud of the fact that she knows how to ride a horse and is more willing to take on new challenges.  Her whole family became involved with Abby’s rising lessons during the height of COVID-19.  Both her parents and grandparents become sidewalkers, and Abby’s grandparents call to get a riding report from Abby every week after her treatment.

Abby’s mother, Katie, says Abby has always struggled in school because ADHD makes it difficult for her to focus in class.  But, after riding at the Center for more than a year, a lot has improved.  Now, in second grade, Abby has gained confidence and has less anxiety.  She is able to focus on reading and follows directions.

Katie noted that Abby’s playdates used to be difficult; Abby’s friendships were all on a surface level.  Now, she has sustained friendships and “best friends”. She engages with others, has two-way conversations, and thinks of others and their needs.  Because of her achievements at Shea, Abby can now join a soccer team and interact with other kids.  She was also in summer drama/theater camp.

Katie is thrilled that Abby now feels she can be successful and calls Shea a special place and a wonderful experience.
