Client Spotlight: Drew G.

Apr 22, 2021 | Adaptive Riding, Clients

Drew G., age 12, has been a Shea Center rider for 3 ½ years.  He began with two sidewalkers, a leader, and an instructor and now, he sometimes rides independently. Riding has improved Drew’s strength, posture, balance, and self-confidence.

Drew’s mom, Heather, says “Riding causes Drew to focus and engage in what he is doing.  His listening skills have improved too.  Adaptive riding is effective therapy because it is comprehensive and addresses physical, occupational and cognitive challenges.

“Drew loves to tack up and lead his horse, because he feels in control.  He also enjoys trotting and riding on the trail.  Drew is very proud of his riding.”

Volunteer Sharon Shrewsbury has been Drew’s leader since his first ride, and the two have developed a strong bond.  Drew also enjoys working with his instructor, Shari Masline.  She guides Drew through his exercises by demonstration, and then lets him choose what exercises he would like to perform to achieve his goals.

Heather remarks, “Being at the Center is Drew’s favorite activity of the week.  He also participates in Shea’s summer horse camp, and he enjoys sharing his experiences with his older sisters who have been Shea Center volunteers.  I have told so many people about The Shea Center; it’s a calming place.  Everyone is so well trained. I have full confidence in the instructors and staff.”
