Client Spotlight: Everett

Oct 31, 2022 | Clients

“The Shea Center is life changing.” Those were the words of Nadia the mother of six-year-old Everett.

Diagnosed with autism at two years of age, Everett has been riding at Shea receiving occupational and speech therapies utilizing hippotherapy for a little over a year. After trying many different therapies, Nadia says nothing holds a candle to their experience at The Shea Center. She states that Everett was hitting a wall in some of his other therapies, but therapy at Shea keeps him interested with a variety of tasks in addition to riding. Everett enjoys cutting carrots, feeding and tacking the horses, and walking Mac ‘n Cheese. Since beginning riding at Shea, Everett’s speech has significantly improved, he has gained self-confidence, and he is more balanced.

According to Nadia, Everett’s energy transforms into a bundle of delight and anticipation when he walks through the Shea Center’s gate.

Nadia comments, “There are few opportunities available for children with special needs. This unique experience is unmatched. The beautiful energy of this place cannot be quantified. It all comes together here being able to be outside and connect with the loving therapists, the wonderful volunteers, and of course the patient horses. Being at Shea doesn’t lose its excitement for me either, being around horses, the energy, and the support from the staff. We love it here! It’s everyone’s favorite part of the week.”
