Groundwork Equals Better Communication and Better Understanding

Nov 5, 2024 | Our Barn

Groundwork is fundamental in a horse’s training and learning. It refers to any work where the person working with the horse is on the ground. Groundwork can be through leading, long lining, or ground driving.

Every program staff member participates in some form of groundwork. Often, our staff work on leading methods and “work in hand” exercises to build clear communication to transfers to work in the saddle.

Our staff follows, teaches, and reinforces the Tristan Tucker Method (TRT) to build confidence and foundational groundwork for our horses. This method consists of a pattern that teaches the horse to listen, reduce tension, and gain confidence. An additional benefit is that it improves the horseman’s/horsewoman’s body language to communicate effectively with the horse (TRT Method, 2024).

Reinforcing groundwork gives horses the confidence and tools to handle stressful and unexpected situations.
