The Gypsy Vanner is one of the most popular horse breeds at The Shea Center. This breed has made a mark on our program because of their intelligence and eagerness to please. The breed originated in Ireland where they were used to pull carts for travelers and farmers. They were much smaller than their Irish Draft Horse relatives, making them easy for families to keep.
Shea has three Gypsy horses in our program all with different shapes and personalities.
In 2014 we received Alik, our 14.2 hand, black Gypsy Vanner gelding. He was 4 years old when he arrived at Shea, was very trainable, and his confidence grew as he started to work with clients. Alik has a distinct gait, showing impulsion from behind, a comfortably smooth movement, and a well-mannered, sociable outlook.
Braveheart, is a 15.1 hand, piebald coated gelding imported from Germany. We were introduced to Braveheart when he came on property for a medieval festival demonstration decorated in tack, with a rider waving a flag and shaking a tambourine. We knew he would be an ideal addition to our program, and with the help of two donors we acquired Braveheart in 2015.

Recently we added Daisy to our team. Daisy is a 14.1 hand, black Gypsy Vanner mare with a bright personality and an active mind. She was born and bred in Tennessee where she produced three beautiful foals before coming to California. Daisy is eager, courageous, alert, and loyal to her handlers. She has a large engaging movement adding diversity to our stock of Gypsy Vanners.
With the support of our donors and relationships in the community we have been fortunate to work with Gypsy Vanner horses. Their love and caring for our clients have made a lasting impression on our program and on our hearts.
