Our handsome new helmet cabinets are a result of the hard work of Shea Center volunteer Zachary S., who designed and built the two cabinets for his Eagle Scout Project.
Zachary, a member of Boy Scouts of America (BSA) troop 774, began volunteering at The Shea Center three years ago, and says he always wanted his Eagle Scout project to benefit the Center. He noticed the existing helmet cabinets were difficult to open and close, so when it was time to begin his project he reached out to Dan Edwards, Shea’s Assistant Facilities Manager. Dan provided feedback on Zac’s design, and the project was approved.

Zac’s brother Matthew, an architectural engineering major at Cal Poly Pomona and former Shea Center Youth Volunteer of the Year, helped with CAD drawings, while younger brother Gabriel (also a scout), dad David, fellow troop members and a family friend with a wood working shop assisted with the build. A neighboring BSA troop helped with painting and transportation.

Zac says he learned plenty of life skills in the process: “I learned leadership skills, when to listen to feedback, the process of designing and carrying out the project from budgeting to shopping to construction, how to fundraise, and how to design the cabinets through help from my freshman engineering class and my older brother. And I learned construction techniques that made the building process run smoothly.”
Thank you, Zac, for the amazing helmet cabinets!
