Physical Therapy Client: Savva

Six-year-old Savva survived a brain stroke in utero, resulting in diagnoses of hemiplegic cerebral palsy, epilepsy, and a speech impairment. While these challenges are part of his journey, they have never defined who he is. Savva is a joyful, adventurous, and determined little boy who meets every day with a smile and a spark of courage.

In just one year at The Shea Center, Savva’s progress has been nothing short of extraordinary. Through physical therapy utilizing hippotherapy (therapy on horseback), he’s not only gaining strength, balance, and coordination—he’s discovering new confidence, independence, and joy. The connection between Savva and his therapy horse has opened doors that traditional therapies couldn’t, inspiring growth in both body and spirit.

His physical therapist comments, “Savva is showing tremendous improvement and now is able to perform balance activities on his horse including standing while the horse is walking. He has improved in his symmetry and his use of both hands when performing tasks including cutting carrots to feed to his horse. He also is improving in his overall endurance including navigating obstacles courses.” Each new milestone—whether balancing more steadily or expressing himself more clearly—reminds his family just how far he can go with the support, expertise, and encouragement of The Shea Center team.
