Why we love him: Sage’s highly social and playful personality has made him a go-to horse for a variety of our programs! He is always one of the first horses to stick his head out and say hello when you walk through the barn and during Equine Assisted Learning (EAL) sessions, he will often pick up cones, pool noodles, or other props and play with them.
What makes him a great therapy horse: Sage excels in both our therapy and military programs and is a wonderful partner to riders working on their independence at the trot and canter gaits. He is also used in our Equine Assisted Psychotherapy (EAP) program to provide appropriate biofeedback to his clients. Sage’s temperament and personality enable clients to learn assertiveness, set boundaries, and encourage communication and self-awareness.

Years of Service: Sage has been leased to us since 2021 by Susan Chaney, our former Board Chair, long-time board member, and lesson volunteer.
Previous Career(s): Sage was born in Arizona and competed in western shows before becoming a therapy horse at The Shea Center.
Fun Fact: Sage has two different eyelash colors! If you look closely at Sage’s left eyelashes, you’ll see they are half white and half black.
