Shea Center Intern: Justine

Apr 26, 2023 | More Info

The Shea Center is a learning facility that takes on select students in occupational therapy, physical therapy, speech, and mental health. Students in these fields require hundreds of clinical hours to fulfill their degree and mentorship to build their skills.

Learn more about Justine, our physical therapy intern!

Her journey to Shea: I grew up in the Bay Area and went to college at The University of Redlands where I studied biology and chemistry. Now, I am in my third year of the doctoral program for physical therapy at USC.

I first heard about The Shea Center in 2020 and was biting at the bit to apply for a rotation! I’ve always been interested in horses and I love working with kids, so combining that in this beautiful setting is a dream come true!

What makes Shea unique: This particular setting of physical therapy is incredibly unique. Providing PT on a horse with a whole care team is very different. I have had to learn to use all parts of my brain to coordinate with the volunteer, horse leader, and the child all at the same time.

I also love that Shea Center clients aren’t limited by their financial status.  In other settings treatment is capped by what insurance will cover.  Here, over 89% of our riders receive financial aid so I can provide treatment for as long as necessary to meet their goals.

Favorite client moments: Every day I feel that my heart could explode from the amount of cuteness. I remember on Valentine’s Day I was really pushing a client on a skill that felt really challenging for him. I was worried he would be mad at me for the rest of the day, but when he accomplished the task, he looked at me and said, “I love you! Happy Valentine’s Day!”. That was a highlight of my life.

Skills she is working on: I’m learning how to translate the movements and activities we’re doing on the horse into everyday skills like walking up and down stairs.  For example, turning around on the horse activates the same muscles needed for walking over obstacles without falling.

Favorite Shea Center horse: Boog is one of my favorites because he has so much personality. I also love Artex and Baxter because their coats are so distinctive.

What’s next for her:  Sadly, my last day at Shea will be May 11th.  On May 12th I graduate, then I will study (like my life depends on it) to take the state board exam to obtain my license. Once that is done and dusted, after 19 years of formal schooling, I will finally be employable!
