Our Volunteer of the Month is Kris Yellin! Kris learned about The Shea Center 13 years ago while horseback riding at Sycamore Trails Stables. Being a horse person and enjoying working with people, she wanted to be a Shea Center volunteer, but was unable to commit to a consistent volunteering schedule while working full-time and busy with three daughters.
Over the next 12 years, Kris drove past The Shea Center and expressed to her family how she couldn’t wait until she had time to volunteer. This past January, she ended her career as an adoption attorney and was able to fit volunteering into her schedule.
Kris’ favorite role at the Center is leading horses because she loves to connect with them. She remarks, “Taking leading cues from the therapist for the benefit of the client is so fulfilling.” Her favorite equine partner is Oscar because he tested Kris the first time she led him, and she is always up for a challenge! After leading Oscar for five days straight during our summer camp, Kris feels they really grew together as a team.

One of Kris’ favorite clients is Alina who she sidewalked with the first time she volunteered. Kris remembers, “I looked forward to greeting her each week and enjoyed watching her progress as she gained confidence on the horse.” Kris says she not only enjoys the clients, but she finds the staff and volunteers all exceptional people who are gracious and positive.
In her free time, Kris enjoys exercising and can hold a plank position for six minutes! She also likes to watch sports while lounging with her dogs and is a hard-core Pittsburgh Steelers fan. Kris also serves on the Mission Viejo Nadadores Swimming Foundation Board.
Congratulations, Kris! The Shea Center is lucky to have an all-star volunteer like you!
