The Purpose of Round Pens and Sun Pens in Equine Care

Dec 3, 2025 | More Info

Round pens are an indispensable asset for training horses in a controlled environment, whether on the ground or under saddle. They are commonly used for free join-up, lunging, and riding. The circular shape supports safe, effective groundwork where the handler can build trust and clear communication with the horse, often resulting in a successful “join-up.”

The enclosed space encourages the horse to focus and practice impulse control. Round pens are ideal for warming up muscles, evaluating movement, and addressing behavioral needs before a ride. They also offer a safe environment for a horse to expend extra energy without escaping into a corner. Additionally, round pens provide both beginner and experienced riders with a focused area to develop specific skills. The Shea Center is fortunate to also have a covered round pen, allowing for continued use during extreme heat or inclement weather.

Just like people, horses need sunshine and a change of scenery. Sun pens offer essential space for movement and mental stimulation outside the stall. These outdoor areas allow horses to stretch their legs, roll, enjoy hay, and socialize with fellow herd members.

Sun pens play an important role in both physical and psychological well-being. Time outside improves digestion and blood circulation—both crucial for hoof health. Sunlight also provides Vitamin D, which supports strong bones and overall wellness. Sun pens help relieve boredom and stress, while social interaction fulfills herd instincts, resulting in calmer, happier horses.

The Shea Center benefits from having both shaded and sun pens, and it’s common to see members of the Shea herd enjoying the fresh air, warm sunshine, and a bit of playtime.
