Therapy Horse Bio: Meet Bear

Feb 3, 2026 | Our Barn

Bear is a sweet and inquisitive four-year-old Belgian Draft Quarter Horse cross, who made his trek from upstate New York. Bear presents as a distinguished gentleman in a young lad’s body – an old soul, if you will. He is watchful and seems to be taking in all the happenings at The Shea Center. Bear is still learning his body and Shea staff is working on building his strength and suppleness as he continues to grow so that he will be able to carry a variety of riders.

Why we love him: Bear is very social with both his herd mates as well as with people. He has already made many friends in the barn. He wants to please and has such a willingness about him. Give him a task and he is all in. He mastered the “find the carrot under the cone” game after only two attempts!

What makes him a great therapy horse: While Bear is currently in the process of his Shea training, he is already proving to be a quick study. He is secure in himself and is clearly motivated by the people working with him. Bear is athletic and smart. He will provide a steady ride with some dynamic movement, which will benefit an array of Shea clients.

Years of Service: Bear arrived at The Shea Center in November 2025, and we are looking forward to many years of service ahead.

Previous Careers: Bear came to The Shea Center with experience as a lesson horse and obstacle training for a Veterans program.
