Therapy Horse Bio: Meet Punkin

Sep 9, 2025 | Our Barn

Punkin is a darling chocolate palomino Appaloosa pony. She is quite the stunner with her spotted rump and face and her spectacular shimmering blonde mane and tail. And doesn’t she know it—Punkin prances about in true princess style like she owns the place.

Punkin was lovingly donated by the Millen family of San Juan Capistrano. When their daughter, Hannah, outgrew her, they wanted to be sure Punkin would continue to be cherished. They knew The Shea Center was the perfect place, where she would receive the love, care, and purpose she deserves.

Why we love her: Punkin is very social and vocal both with people and with the herd. Within days of Punkin’s arrival at The Shea Center, she had Braveheart and Dante wrapped around her little hooves! Punkin loves attention, which makes her a magnet for anyone walking near her stall. Staff and volunteers love her because she is just so darn cute. Clients love her, because, well, she is just so darn cute!

What makes her a great therapy pony: Punkin is perfectly petite for The Shea Center littles. She is spunky, yet steady. Punkin provides smooth, rhythmic movement and is an ideal size for hands on therapy. Punkin has quickly shown that she can do everything that her larger herd mates can do. Even the challenge course is no challenge for this self-assured pony.

Years of Service: Punkin arrived at The Shea Center in July 2025

Previous Career(s): Before coming to The Shea Center, Punkin was a pleasure pony and beloved companion to Hannah Millen.
