Why we love her: Grace is a sidewalker for client Hudson D. on Thursday afternoons and Saturday mornings during his physical therapy hippotherapy treatments. In addition to supporting him on his horse Auggie, Grace keeps him smiling by singing his favorite songs, while helping him build strength and independence.
Path to The Shea Center: “I learned about The Shea Center through my older sister who volunteered here while she was in high school. I have always had an interest in working with kids which is what lead me to being a sidewalker as it allows me to interact the most with them.”
Years of service: Grace has been a Shea volunteer for four years, and has worked with Hudson for the past three years.
Lessons learned: “At Shea, I have learned that by putting in the effort, amazing accomplishments can be made. This has proven to be true as I have watched Hudson going from needing a lot of support when walking, to being able to walk with only the help of someone holding his hand or shoulder.”

Favorite Shea Center memories: “My absolute favorite memory at Shea was when we were doing a challenging activity with Hudson, and he said, ‘I did it!’. Everyone in the lesson was so excited – it was a very big deal for Hudson to say a full sentence without being prompted. It was such a special moment because it truly showed just how far he has come since he first arrived at Shea. Every day Hudson improves so much and I feel so lucky to be a part of it.”
When not at The Shea Center, she can be found…: “When I’m not volunteering I am a student at Saddleback College. I also work as a graphic designer for their Arts Department where I create advertisements for Arts events occurring through the school.”
She finds her bliss doing this: “I feel the happiest at The Shea Center. This is all because of Hudson and his heartwarming giggle. His smile can truly turn my whole day around.”
Future plans for this game-changer: Grace is interested in working in the movie industry. “As of now, I’m considering becoming a producer, but am keeping an open mind as I learn more about each position.”
