Congratulations to our newest Volunteer of the Month, Nancy Conklin! Volunteer Services Manager Michele Gingras had this to say about Nancy: “Nancy has been a fantastic addition to the volunteer team. Since joining, she has eagerly stepped in to assist wherever needed, both in lessons and throughout the six weeks of summer camp. We’re incredibly fortunate to have Nancy and the positive difference she brings to our clients!”
Why we love her: Nancy is a dedicated volunteer who is flexible and eager to expand her skill set at Shea. This summer, she worked every week at Shea Camp, serving as a group volunteer assigned to assist a specific camper and, at other times, as a leader. Sometimes, she pulled double duty as both: helping with a camper and then grabbing a lead rope and leading for the mounted rotation.

Road to The Shea Center: “Over the years, I have heard volunteers express enthusiasm for the work Shea does. When I retired, I was excited to have time to explore the opportunity to volunteer.”
Years of Service: Nancy began volunteering earlier this year.

Lessons learned: “Above all, I’ve learned that the clients themselves exhibit courage beyond what I knew was possible. I am in awe of their attitude. The Shea Center staff, with their patience and dedication (thank you, Michele, Taylir, Shari, Kris, Christie, Heidi, Sharon, Matt, Karen, Cat, Maddie, Randi, Mari, and Patti) have all either taught me the basics of sidewalking and/or leading or given me helpful hints along the way. These professionals are vital to the well-being of Shea’s clients.”
Favorite Shea Center memories: “Occasionally, a young child will be afraid to get on a horse, but a skillful Shea therapist has gently encouraged them to do so. Within a few moments, smiles occur. The games and activities provided by the therapists are intriguing, and almost all the children delight in achieving success, even if there is a moment or two along the way that is difficult. I have always loved being with horses and children. So, to me, Shea is a slice of all that is good in this world.”
When not volunteering at Shea, she can be found doing this: “Probably doing something outdoors; being with my adult children and grandchildren on the weekends; walking with friends; gardening; or hiking near the beach. I am an avid reader. I also volunteer with a couple of community organizations and at our church.”
She finds her bliss…: ”Learning almost anything new; watching a young child find joy in the simplicity of life; being a volunteer at Shea (of course).”
