Weekly Staff Lessons and Equine Exercise

Jun 10, 2024 | Our Barn

Every week, our horses are exercised by program staff members. Each horse has a specially designed exercise/schooling schedule developed by the Equine Operations Manager with veterinarian guidance. Nearly all the horses, with the exception of some ponies (Mac and Cheese and Boog), walk in the Euro Walker daily as part of their exercise program. Our equine staff, therapists, and instructors participate in weekly lessons to keep the herd fit and healthy. Staff exercise the horses in various ways, including mounted work such as arena riding and trail riding and unmounted work such as long-line lunging, ground driving, join-up, and groundwork.

An equestrian guide in a pink shirt and riding helmet leads a large black horse with a white blaze and feathered hooves in an outdoor riding arena. Trees and buildings can be seen in the background.

Every horse in the program walks, trots, and canters. With each horse involved in diverse training, staff help strengthen their toplines and maintain their balance and suppleness for our client lessons. Having therapists and instructors actively involved in horse exercise allows them to work hands-on with the horses they use in client lessons.

Many of the program horses are long-line lunged, which generates several benefits that transfer under saddle. The person on the ground can see and feel what modifications to make with the control of two reins to communicate with the horse.
